After a month of dealing with cranky students who were unable to eat or drink anything from sunup to sundown during the October Ramazan, we got a chance for a rare break from teaching over Ramazan Bayram, the holiday to celebrate the end of fasting. So we took the opportunity to pop across the border (translation - 10 hour bus ride) to visit the seaside town of Varna in Bulgaria.
For a group of people who had been teaching from 9am to 10pm on a regular basis, living in a lojmen (teachers housing) with curfews and alcohol bans Varna was a veritable oasis in the desert. A large beer cost $1, a tequila shot was $1.50 and a bottle of wine at a restaurant was $6... it was heaven. Especially when we discovered a restaurant around the corner with four cheese pizza and blue cheese salad... after longingly eyeing off the exorbitant ($14 for 300g) packet of blue cheese in my local Turkish supermarket for months, İ finally had a chance to go to town on cheese and red wine in Bulgaria.
İn addition to food and alcohol, Varna was a pleasant change to the crowds, chaos and pollution of İstanbul. Varna has stumbled across garbage bins and actually uses them, marvelous inventions that they are. There were far fewer people and it was possible to walk a block in less than 10 minutes... although the Bulgarians are obviously feeling a lack given their neighbours abundant popluation and seem to be doing their best to catch up. İ have never seen so many babies in my life. Most young women carry handbags as accessories... in Varna it seems you wouldn't be seen dead without a stroller or baby on your hip instead. İt was not unusual to see a line of 5 or 6 strollers in a row, being pushed by 'yummy mummies' in tight jeans and knee high stiletto boots, coming towards you down the central boulevard.
All in all it was a fantastic trip, dirt cheap, nice friendly hostel, good service and the men didn't stare at us all the time or try to chat us up. Every now and again we managed to see daylight as well, as you can see we actively took in some of the tourist attractions....
However all good things must come to an end and after a nice 4 day break it was time to get back to work... but not for much longer. İn 4 more weeks İ will be winging my way to Thailand for a short holiday and shopping trip before heading back to the land down under... to turn around fairly promptly and head back to France again. İt' seems İ just can't get enough of this flying caper....

One of our little weekend jaunts was to Annecy, which was gorgeous, had quite a Swiss feel about it. The water in these canals was so clear that you could see right to the bottom.

Looks like a bit of mould at first, but zoom in... uh uh... daddy long legs the size of my palm... everywhere! This is just one corner of the bathroom, several other corners were the same. We got more up close and personal with them on the following day on a 5 hour waterfall hike. They seem to like living in massive groups near water, so there were many moments walking along the river when it was safest just to not look down to avoid seeing them swarming all over the ground.
I leave Chiang Mai for Vietnam on Friday, where I'll be volunteering in Nha Trang for 4 weeks before heading to Cambodia. Look forward to hearing how everyone is going!
